When using electronics in an explosive environment must be taken special measures. The energy that can be generated in the electronics must present limited by the use of intrinsically safe circuits. This is achieved by limiting both voltage (U) and current (I).
Intrinsically safe equipment is classified by Atex into three levels:
- Ex-ia material may not give ignition under normal use in the event of a single fault or a combination of any two faults whatsoever.
- Ex ib material may not give ignition under normal use in the event of a single fault.
- Ex ic material shall not give ignition under normal use.
The safety is realized through barriers; preferably on the PCB. Engineering Spirit has several solutions for Ex-ia products made for electronic measuring equipment in the oil and gas industry.
